BMTS To Hold Public Meetings On Main Street Corridor Study

The Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study, in its ongoing effort to support revitalization of the region's core communities through transportation investment, is progressing a Main Street Corridor Long Range Plan. The BMTS Transportation Plan, Transportation Tomorrow 2030~Placemaking for Prosperity, identifies as a high priority action “rebuilding Main Street using the principles of context sensitive solutions and placemaking. To begin identifying projects, we must understand what residents of the region envision for the future of Main Street. In order to solicit public input, BMTS will conduct a series of public meetings in each of the municipalities along Main Street:

This is a consequence of BMTS' guiding principle: “We plan best when we plan WITH the community, not FOR the community”. The meeting will offer the opportunity to discuss not only transportation improvements, but also land use changes.

Downtown Circulator Study

As you may or may not know, Broome County will begin construction of a new bus terminal which will be located at the corner of Chenango Street and Henry Street in 2010. Once this project is completed, the BC Transit Junction, which is now located on Hawley Street will be moved to the new bus terminal. The Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study is doing a study to determine the effect that this move will have on downtown Binghamton residents and others who use BC Transit as a means of transportation. Results from this study will help determine if there would be public interest in a "downtown circulator" bus that would travel from the new BC Junction location, through downtown, and back to the Junction with stops along the way.
