SADD - Students Against Destructive Decisions

Dear Parents,

Our children are faced with enormous challenges regarding the use or avoidance of alcohol and other drugs. I am an educator and parent of three young men who understands your concerns about these issues. Despite our determination to provide a drug free environment, statistics and past experiences have proven that this is difficult to attain.

We should never give up. We must begin to deal with these problems with an improved perspective on relevant solutions. Our children often push us away in their desire to acquire independence as they mature. We are less a part of their intimate world. We hear these comments, "My world is different than yours" or "I can handle it" or "It's my business". It's no wonder that many of us are shocked when we discover that our children are using illegal substances. We learn sadly that yes, it can be our children. I am convinced that if you and your child work together to recognize how death has been camouflaged through poor parent-child communication and peer pressure, then you can strive towards eliminating death and injury caused by the use of illegal substances. Thus our new Contract for Life reflects the SADD commitment to that challenge.

The Contract for Life acts as a safeguard against death. It helps to improve family communication and acts as a support for children as they cope with peer pressure when they are faced with the decision not to use illegal drugs or engage in underage drinking. When you use the Contract for Life you demonstrate that your love for your children and theirs for you is strong enough to overcome any obstacle that may force them to challenge death.

I urge all parents to team up with your local SADD chapter. Your children need your help. The thousands of parents who have responded positively have proven that they can make a difference. Our children are most precious. Believe in them as they believe in you.
